Snoring negatively impacts the lives of millions. Many health professionals use oral appliance therapy to treat snoring. Some snorers benefit from changing their sleep patterns while others use orthodontic-related appliances to open airways during sleep.
Why Do People Snore?
Snoring takes place due to the vibrations of soft and/or hard tissue palates. Narrowing air passages create these vibrations. The snoring sound is actually a ‘flapping’ sound. Some patients who have surgery don’t always get the result they are looking for.
Common causes for snoring include:
- Alcohol consumption
- Being overweight
- Deviated Septum
- Poor tongue muscle tone
If the snoring is especially loud, there may be a serious case of blocked air passages; this condition is known as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). When this happens, air blockage is so severe that air stops getting through to the lungs and this causes poor sleep because the snorer wakes up repeatedly. OSAS can lead to other health problems including high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack and depression. If you believe you are suffering from sleep apnea, it’s extremely important to see a medical professional.
