There are certain things that pertain to your oral health that should not be ignored. Any tooth pain or sensitivity needs to be reported to your dentist right away as they are often a sign of a cavity or infection within the tooth. Swollen, irritated gums that bleed easily and that are tender also need never to be ignored. Gums that are swollen or tender are often the first sign that gingivitis is present inside the mouth. Gingivitis is the beginning stage of gum disease, and if it is left untreated it will begin to deteriorate the gums and lead to tooth loss.
Gingivitis is caused by bacteria that are allowed to persistently build up around the gum line. While you have bacteria inside your mouth all of the time, regular brushing and flossing keeps the bacteria at a minimal level so that they do not harm your mouth. However, when oral hygiene is not put as a priority in your life, these bacteria will grow quickly and multiply to where they are at a very harmful level and will release toxins that cause gum irritation. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease, and once periodontal disease moves beyond gingivitis it will cause irreparable damage to the gums.
Early detection of gingivitis is incredibly important, because when it is caught early-on it can be reversed. A deep cleaning and treatment by your dentist can reverse the symptoms of gingivitis so that the gums can heal properly. With a commitment to proper oral hygiene (brushing and flossing every single day), the gums can become healthy and remain healthy. However, a plan must be developed to eradicate the problems causing gingivitis or it will reoccur.
