Teeth Whitening: Don’t Make These Common Mistakes

Having a bright smile is one of the most attractive accessories anyone can wear. A beautiful smile is the representation of health and happiness, drawing others in and often making up for other shortcomings. Many people go to great lengths to achieve a beautiful smile through proper oral care, orthodontics, and teeth whitening. While all of these are admirable, a great deal of people are having adverse effects with teeth whitening done at home. Much time and money are wasted each year across America by those using over the counter teeth whitening products that cannot achieve the results users desire, and by the harm that people are causing to their teeth.

Common mistakes using teeth whitening products at home can leave users with a damaged smile and with unwanted results that are expensive to repair. Don’t make these common mistakes:

Failure to seek dental advice. It is important to speak with your dentist before beginning any type of at-home regimen for your teeth. Your dentist knows your mouth in a unique way, and s/he can let you know whether your teeth are healthy enough for at-home whitening products. Your dentist can also provide guidance and recommendations suitable for your personal smile.

Improper use of whitening products. The most damaging effects of at-home whitening products are caused by improper use. The most common wrongful assumption is that leaving whitening products on longer will achieve better and faster results. This is absolutely not true! Leaving any type of whitening product on your teeth longer than directed can cause adverse results: uneven whitening, discoloration spots, extreme tooth sensitivity, white spots on the gums, and weakening of the tooth enamel. It is imperative that, if using at-home whitening products, you follow the directions precisely in order to avoid damaging your teeth and ruining your oral health.

Using “one size fits all” trays. Simply put, there is no such thing as “one size fits all.” Trays that are not custom fit to your own teeth will not produce the results you want. A tray that is too large will not place whitening gel against your teeth evenly, and trays that are too small will cause the whitening gel to ooze out and cause adverse reactions.
